Cemagref is under the joint supervision of the ministries in charge of research and agriculture. It is an example of an integrative environmental research focuses on the territorial level, and action-oriented.

Multidisciplinary teams of Cemagref researchers and engineers work on adaptation to global change, combining the experimental sciences, economics and social science data (modeling, data integration) :

- Environmental riks: floods, avalanches, forest fires, diffuse pollution

- Continental aquatic monitoring, water resources, water uses

- Clean technologies: technologies, eco-assessment, toxicology, treatment and energy recovery from organic waste.

- Land use planning

- Economy and sociology of the environment
